Beautiful Bags from Beautiful People

Posted on September 30, 2010 by Mary

A very fabulous lady once said “I’m thinking balls are to men what purses are to women. It’s just a little bag, but we feel naked in public without it.” who was she? well Carrie Bradshaw of course! and I couldn’t agree more. My bag (which honestly is far from small) holds everything that is important and essential for me to survive: wallet, keys, cell, headache pills, make-up, hand lotion, perfume, munchies, water, headphones, gum, glasses and sometimes even one of those pairs of shoes you can roll up so I can put them on when it rains.

I know it sounds like a suitcase more than a bag, but come on ladies…you know it’s true and I’m probably even missing some stuff! The point is that us gals need (and love) our handbags to get us through the day, so why am I seeing so many of the same bag over and over again? Come on ladies there are some fabulous options out there that bring new and fresh ideas to the fashion world and that can transform any outfit from “blah” to “wow” in the blink of an eye…plus, who doesn’t like some arm candy?

So in an effort to help you broaden your fashion horizon and venture into new territories, I want to introduce you to Beautiful People Handbags. Last week I met with designer Johanna Boccardo and production director Maria Briceno at Emporium Boutique in Coral Gables to find all about their brand, amazing bags, luxurious materials and much more…here is what they said:

TSH: Tell me about your designs?

BPH:I like to describe my designs as “classical classics” with a very specific type of design that is not necessarily following the trends but that it still fits into what is current and fashionable today. They have sort of a romantic yet classic feel that allows you to wear them today, next season, five years from today and so on. My idea is to create pieces that can be passed on generation to generation and withstand the test of time not only because they are made with materials of the highest quality but also because they are very classic and functional in design.

TSH: The materials are truly luxurious and I love the craftsmanship…tell us, where do the bags come from?

BPH: Most of our leathers come from Peru and we are starting to work with Brazilian materials as well. Each bag is individually handcrafted; everything from the cutting to the sowing is done by hand. You’ll notice that every bag has different details in the cuts and seams and I love that, because to me it is that unique human touch that each artisan puts into the pieces they work on.

TSH: When putting together your designs and selecting the colors and materials, what kind of woman do you keep in mind?

BPH: We started out as a family company and that’s how we’ve been growing, so when I’m looking for inspiration and putting together the designs I like to think of all the women in my family, from my grandmother all the way down to my 3 year-old niece. I remember when I was younger going “treasure hunting” into my grandmother’s closet and finding beautiful vintage bags and accessories that I could incorporate into my wardrobe and add a unique touch that no one else had, so I want to bring that same connection and uniqueness to all our customers.

TSH: So far you have put together 3 collections: Capulet, Origami and now this new collection for Spring 2011. Out of all the bags, which one would you consider your favorite?

BPH: Our “baby” is definitely our “Little Rose“. We’ve carried it in every collection making a few changes in the leathers and colors; this really is one of our most popular designs. Last year it was selected out of 700 bags as one of only 8 finalists in the Independent Handbag Designer Awards and it is now available at Anthroplogy.com. For the Spring 2011 collection we have maintained the original design in classic colors like black and gold and have introduced a new version called “Spring Little Rose” which is available in more vibrant colors like lemonade and bright blue for a sportier look.

TSH: You have accomplished a lot with these 3 collections, what would you say is your ultimate goal for the brand?

BPH: We are actually very happy to say that one of our goals was met when Anthropology started carrying our “Little Rose“. Our next goal is to see our bags in high end, kind of underground boutiques all over NYC. For example we love the independent and always edgy styles of stars like ChloĆ« Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, so that’s the target we want to reach. Seen Beautiful People available at Henri Bendel for instance would be a total dream come true.
